Aesthetics
Before engaging ourselves into the content, let us remember five important questions to ask when evaluating the aesthetics, in order to 'know' it in an epistemic way.
What is art? We're essentially asking, 'What is aesthetic knowledge?'
Who cares? We're asking, 'How is aesthetic knowledge constructed?'
Can art be evaluated? We're asking, 'What makes aesthetic knowledge valid?'
What is art for? 'How is aesthetic knowledge affetect by society?'
Is art moral? 'How should aesthetic knowledge be used?'
How do we know what is art?
-how do we evaluate?
-a criteria would be useful in this case when evaluating art
-what kind of criteria we can employ?
Art cognitive values
-propositional
-procedual (skills)
-knowledge of value
-phenomenal knowledge (experience)
-conceptual knowledge (metaphor/symbols)
What is art:
Brainstormed ideas are such
-made into display/arrangement
-pleasing to the senses (functions)
-conveys a message (functions) -political, moral, social
-showcases talent (functions)
-shows cultural identity (functions)
-shows emotions (functions)
-tells a story (functions)
Also, please distinguish the artist, the artwork and his audience clearly when debating about art because they are different.
Properties of art itself, not its external use/functions is important for us to know art in its pure form and not its associations with other things.
