Knowledge & Belief

Important Distinctions
Knowing "how" - Ability/skill is NOT a definition of knowledge
E.g: I know how to drive a car.

Knowing "that" - Propositional knowledge. An idea or concept, to know a piece of information
E.g: I know that Paris is the capital of France

Two Extremes
1.) Humans can know every truth about reality.
2.) Humans can know nothing.

Definition
Knowledge = JTB (Justified True Belief)
OR
Someone (S) knowing a given proposition (P):
1. P is true
2. S is sure that P is true
3. S has the right to be sure that P is true

Belief
Definition - Being certain or sure of a piece of information
- Comes from certain sources
- Based on Proposition, not sensation/emotion

Questions to Ponder
1.) What qualities/characteristics should our beliefs have?
2.) What qualities do our actual present beliefs have?
3.) What other qualities could our beliefs have?
